St Petersburg, 10 November 2009
The Grand Hotel Europe, St Petersburg’s oldest luxury hotel, has been named the Leading Luxury Hotel in the world by World Travel Awards - travel industry's equivalent to the Oscar's (quote by Wall Street Journal).
Overview - Grand Hotel Europe
The most luxurious hotel in St Petersburg, the 5 star deluxe Grand Hotel Europe, an Orient Express Hotel, has the perfect location in the city centre, located just off the Nevsky Prospekt and close to the Russian Museum. The hotel has played an important role in the life of St. Petersburg for over 130 years. Since it opened its doors in 1875, it has stood as testimony to the excellence of Russian hospitality. The tsarists regarded it as their playground, the Communists turned it into the 'House of the Soviet Clerk' and perestroika changed it into Russia’s first five-star hotel.
The great master of Russian music, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky spent his honeymoon there, Johann Strauss occupied "comfort room No 26" for 14 days, for Turgenev there was no better place in the whole of St Petersburg, Rasputin dined there, George Bernard Shaw met Maxim Gorky in a private dining room, tenor Enrico Caruso advised soprano Luisa Tetrazzini to go on and to become the "soprano of the world", Dimitri Shostakovitch played a sonata for Sergey Prokofiev in his suite, Elton John performed at the restaurant, President Clinton took a rest for four hours in the Lidval Suite. Jane Fonda cooked her own food there. Queen ElizabethII praised the hotel’s kitchen and - talking about Royals: the Romanovs, Russia's eminent tsars family, is still gathering at the Grand Hotel for family reunions! Where else?
This is the story of a beautiful city and the legend of Russia’s oldest grand hotel.
Elegance reigns throughout the Grand Hotel Europe’s palatial interior, where history becomes a precious setting to modern comfort and convenience. In surroundings redolent of the belle époque, the six restaurants and bars of the Grand Hotel Europe offer the complete dining experience. Centre stage is the Caviar Bar, offering an extensive selection of caviar, served with ice-cold vodka - the true taste of Russia.
The Health Club and SPA offers a fully equipped gym, a sauna, a solarium and beauty salon. Hotel’s events facilities are ideal for important meetings, conferences and banquets for up to 250 people. Catering for large or small gatherings in St. Petersburg's opulent palaces. Wi-Fi. Biggest in Europe fleet of brand new BMW limousines.
Accommodation - Grand Hotel Europe
The first floor with historic rooms, suites and apartments with butler service. Second and third floors for non-smoking guests. The Hotel has 301 rooms and suites 250 of which were recently renovated. Each room maintains the hotel’s historic character and reflects its fascinating architectural heritage. Terrace Rooms are especially popular with our guests during summer, when outdoor furniture is placed on the terraces facing the Church of the Spilt Blood, one of St. Petersburg’s most beautiful landmarks. Antique furniture is used throughout the suites, with the color and style of the decor reflecting the elegance and dignity of turn-of-the-century Tsarist Russia.
Room equipment: air conditioning, WiFi access, radio, hairdryer, safety box, TV with International channels, minibar, iron (on request), voice mail.
9 Renovated Historic Suites
The suites are all of them large in area – in average about 65 m2 (700 ft2), and they offer the rare possibility in today’s hectic world, of relaxing and entertaining in luxurious surroundings, and with the utmost peace and privacy. The views out of the windows are some of the best in St Petersburg, looking out as they do across the classical ensemble of Arts Square, the quiet of Mikhailovsky Street or the bustle of Nevsky Prospect.
It was Monsieur Jouannet’s intention to reimagine and reinterpret the suites for the most demanding and exacting of international guests, and yet to do so without losing any of the original period Russian details – an original blue cobalt chandelier in one suite, a floor-length leaded mirror in another, an art nouveau lamp.... Not only that, but he wanted to give back to the suites their original grand style, and at the same time also to provide them with the most up-to-date technical facilities, and not to compromise with either of his intentions.
For keeping in touch with the outside world, there is a 32-inch flatscreen TV in the drawing room, with high-speed internet access, and, of course, Wi-Fi as standard. Technology comes beautifully into play in the bedrooms where one can enjoy the comfort of an extra-size hypoallergenic mattress, and at the press of a button, a flatscreen TV rises up from out of the cabinet at the foot of the bed.
To walk into the bathrooms in any one of the nine suites, is to walk into a reminder of the Roman Baths built for Catherine the Great, alongside the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo (now Pushkin). For Catherine, the architect Charles Cameron used pale marbles and ceramic intaglios as decorative details, and for the Grand Hotel Europe, Michel Jouannet has used these same materials and motifs. The comparison between the two designers is a just one; they are both masters of their art.
Restaurant and Bars - Grand Hotel Europe
The Grand Hotel Europe is pleased to offer five restaurants, two cafés and one bar to delight our guests during their stay. Authentic Russian delicacies are available in the Caviar Bar and Restaurant, whilst other restaurants allow you to tour the world's finest kitchens for French, Italian and even Asian dining.
L'Europe Restaurant:
L'Europe's menu regularly changes for our guests to enjoy a different and exciting culinary experience, each time they dine with us. L'Europe specialises in French and European cuisine, impeccably served in the lovingly restored Art Nouveau interior. Live music accompanies the unrivalled culinary experience in an elegant, intimate atmosphere. Our elegant Buffet Breakfast is accompanied by harp music, while a variety of entertainment takes place during Dinner.
One of St. Petersburg’s favourite sons is composer Peter Tchaikovsky. In commemoration of this great musician every Friday the Grand Hotel Europe holds Tchaikovsky nights at L’Europe restaurant, where guests can enjoy a superb dinner to the sounds of timeless melodies by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. A ballet duo performing the White Adagio from Swan Lake, and music played by a 13-piece orchestra will make this night one to remember.
Caviar Bar and Restaurant:
Caviar Bar of the Grand Hotel Europe is the Russian fine dining restaurant. The only in the city vodka sommelier will help you to make your choice of over 50 kinds of Russian Vodka including home infused. The restaurant serves traditional Russian menu with wide assortment of best Russian caviar (Sevruga, Osetra, Beluga).
Recently opened after the renovation the Caviar Bar restaurant has gained a truly luxurious Russian Imperial touch. The original Marble Room was designed at end of the 19th century and is presently under the protection of Historical Monuments inspection alongside with most the hotel’s historic preservation areas. The room is made up with marble stucco with green marble floor and marble columns. The decoration details — column capitals, gilded crayfish and marguerite cornice, centaur stucco on the walls — all are influenced by neo-classic style typical for the turn-of-the-century décor. The original Gargule fountain has been carefully restored and now the water is playing under the stucco panel originating from Greece depicting wine and music feast.
Other Facilities
The Grand Hotel Europe’s beautiful banquet and conference facilities are hosting Russia’s most notable social and cultural events for up to 250 people. Each room is unique with classic interiors, beautiful views and the most modern facilities. Besides the Grand Hotel Europe offers superb catering services. It has organized the Tchaikovsky Ball, Pushkin Ball, Winter Ball and
many other major events in the former imperial residence of Catherine the Great in nearby Tsarskoe selo. Large and small private groups may hold events in this as well as several other luxurious palaces in St. Petersburg.

It was really difficult to enter Russia by car and the documents we received from the hotel for issuing VISA , helped us a lot.
