Hotel History
The parcel of land which Hotel Oktyabrskaya currently occupies, was recorded into St. Petersburg history as early as the middle of the 18th century when the tsar’s menagerie 'Elephant’s Yard' was located here. Construction of the railway between Moscow and St. Petersburg and the building of Nikolaevsky Railway Station, started the development of a large square in front of the railway station. It’s design was approved in February 1845, by Emperor Nicholas I himself. He ordered impressive looking facilities to be built opposite St Petersburg's new Moscow Railway Station.
The building of Oktiabrskaya hotel was designed by architect A.P.Guemilian.
Newspapers of that time described the construction works in details, stating that this building is large, they said, it would consist of 100-150 various facilities for guests. Looking at the rooms, as yet unfinished at that time, one could confidently state that the hotel would be magnificent.
The hotel was equipped with amazing technical innovations of the time: the rooms were heated by "pneumonic stoves", fans were installed to purify the air, passages were equipped with "talking tubes". The hotel was called 'Znamenskaya' and opened in December, 1851 a year and half later, when regular communication by virtue the first Russian railway was established.
Grand Hotel of Nord
In the second half of the 19th century the hotel was reconstructed several times, it changed owners and names. After Znamenskaya it became Severnaya, then it was renamed Big Severnaya.
At the beginning of the 20th century it acquired particular respectability. The building was decorated with a dome, inside of which there was a restaurant. An elevator with electrical motor was added to the building’s facade. The hotel had its own omnibus which was pulled by horses, it was available for the guests. The rooms at the hotel numbered more than two hundred. There were 23 bathrooms. Many rooms were equipped with the city telephones. The restaurant, one of the largest in the city, accommodated up to 500 people. The hotel rooms were furnished with elegant furniture and carpets.
After the revolution the building was given to the October Railway Administration. Only in 1930 the hotel was opened again, with the name it bears today.
