Meeting Place festival of contemporary art, Literary Museum of Odessa
(2 Lanzheronovskaya, Odessa), 3-7 September
The name of this festival will remind Ukrainians of the Soviet movie starring the great bard singer and actor Vladimir Vysotsky: one gets the sense that the organisers are using Vysotsky’s darkly romantic, oppositional persona to underscore what this festival’s atmosphere will be about. So get ready for experimental forays in literature, music and theatre. Apart from presentations by artists and writers from Ukraine, Russia, Germany and Georgia, visitors will be able to enjoy what the locals call the ‘velvet season’ on the Black Sea coast and some fine Bessarabian wine. 28 Aug 08; THE GEORGIAN Football Federation (GFF) and the Football Association of Ireland should, finally, learn today where Saturday week's World Cup qualifier between the nations will be staged, with Fifa due to end the uncertainty surrounding the fixture, created by the recent conflict between Russia and Georgia, by making a decision on the venue for the game following a meeting today.
The Georgians are awaiting a response from Fifa after they sent a letter yesterday to the governing body asking for the game to go ahead, as originally scheduled, in Tbilisi, the country's capital.
They have, though, as requested by Fifa, nominated an alternative venue, with Karlsruhe in Germany now believed to be their choice, after they had initially considered venues in Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan and, later, Krakow (Poland) and Graz (Austria).
With the assistance of their Karlsruhe SC forward Aleksandre Iashvili Georgia have, according to GFF spokesman Aleksandr Tsonbalidze, received a positive response from the Bundesliga club to their request that the Wildparkstadion ground be made available, if required, for the fixture.
The stadium has a capacity of 29,699 but with just 15,237 seats, compared to the 55,000 all-seater capacity of the venue in Tbilisi, the Boris Paichadze National Stadium.

In 2009 restrictions will be introduced regarding the traffic in Riga's Old Town, which will reduce the number of vehicles in downtown Riga, as Riga Mayor Janis Birks (For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK) said in an interview on the Latvian State Radio yesterday.
It is planned that from the beginning of the next year, only those drivers will receive passes to enter Riga's Old Town who can produce a rent contract for an apartment or a property in Riga's Old Town or prove their right to access a site in the Old Town by car.
"This bureaucratic provision will limit the number of cars entering Riga's Old Town," said Riga mayor.
It is estimated that only 200 to 300 cars enter Riga's Old Town to stay there overnight, whereas the number of permits for driving into the Old Town is around 1,500.
