City Information
General Overview
The capital of Argentina is a city of wide boulevards, plazas with monuments and fountains, beautiful residential districts and lively streets that never sleep. Experience this fabulous city on a tour that visits Plaza de Mayo, a park surrounded by the government palace, old cabildo and the cathedral housing the remains of San Martin.
The Regal Colon Opera House, whose acoustics are said to be the best in the world is also here. Continue along Avenida 9 de Julio, the widest street in the world, to Palermo Park with its race track and its beautiful rose gardens. See the Recoleta cemetary (the resting place of Eva Peron) and the quaint and lively Italian quarter of La Roca.
Culture
Buenos Aires is one of the most colorful and exciting cities in South America. Bounded by the River Plate on the east and the "pampas" on the west, Buenos Aires is where one may enjoy sophistication and culture.
There is polo, tango and a history that is reflected in the architectural styles of the French, Spanish and Italians. There is superb shopping in the arcades of the city, concerts to be enjoyed in the famous Colon Opera House and sights to be seen in the La Boca district with its tango bars, museums and galleries - this is the dynamic city of Buenos Aires!
Economy
Buenos Aires is the financial, industrial, commercial, and cultural hub of Argentina. Its port is one of the busiest in South America; navigable rivers by way of the Rio de la Plata connect the port to north-east Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. As a result it serves as the distribution hub for a vast area of the south-eastern region of the South American continent.
The economy in the city proper alone, measured by Gross Geographic Product (adjusted for purchasing power), totalled US$ 84.7 billion (US$ 30,525 per capita) in 2006 and amounts to nearly a fourth of Argentina's as a whole. Metro Buenos Aires, according to one well-quoted study, constitutes the 13th largest economy among the world's cities.
