Omsk was founded in 1716 and is the second largest Siberian city by population, the centre of Omsk region and a large port on Irtysh river. By the late 19th century the city had become the centre of a large province.
Omsk is one of the cultural centres of Siberia. The city is by right reputed as the theatre centre. There are 6 theatres in the city, the oldest of which - Omsk Academic Drama Theatre - was established in 1874. One of the largest museums of fine arts found in 1924 is also situated in Omsk. More than 16000 invaluable pieces of art are gathered there.
The present-day Omsk is a large industrial centre of Siberia where the largest enterprises of the petrochemical, the chemical, the aircraft, the electrical and the machine-building industries are situated. Omsk is the garden city, the city of wide squares and avenues, cosy green parks and gardens. Numerous monuments will tell you about glorious past and present of the city.
